What is Kriyā?

November 1, 2024

Kriyā (क्रिया) means “evolutionary action" or “purification practice” and refers to a specific set of yogic methods designed to shift energy, dissolve mental stagnation, and awaken awareness. Unlike Āsana, general movements, or exercise, Kriyā is intentional, structured, and energetically targeted. It works simultaneously on the physical, emotional, and subtle layers of the body, helping to clear old patterns and create space for clarity, vitality, and transformation.

Rooted in ancient tantric and yogic traditions, Kriyās are sequences that combine breath work, rhythmic movement, mantra, mudrā, visualization, and focused attention. Each is designed with a precise energetic purpose like balancing the nervous system, chakra cleansing, releasing stored emotion, or expanding inner awareness. These practices work with Prāṇa to clear blockages and direct energy along the Nāḍīs to influence your physical, mental, and emotional state.

Kriyā is different from Kundalini in its ability to bypass the overactive thinking mind. Through repetition and sustained effort, practices disrupts habitual mental loops and invites a deeper state of presence. When the breath, sound, and body move together in a rhythmic and meditative flow, the mind becomes quiet, comes fully to the present, and the deeper layers of consciousness become accessible. This shift often leads to emotional release, intuitive insight, or a renewed sense of inner steadiness.

Kriyās can range from soft and subtle to powerful and intense, but their effectiveness is profound. They are not about force. They are about consistency, sincerity, and devotion. Practiced correctly, they help regulate the nervous system, cultivate resilience, and dissolve outdated impressions (Samskāras). Over time, they create a more spacious inner environment where clarity, creativity, and grounded awareness can naturally arise. Kriyā offers a direct pathway back to to inner purification, to your center. Through purposeful action, it's possible to reconnect with your inner rhythm, awaken dormant potential, and move closer to alignment with your truest Self.
