What's a Graha?

April 20, 2026

In Jyotish, the term Graha is often translated as “planet,” but its meaning is deeper than the modern astronomical definition. The word graha comes from the Sanskrit root ग्रह् (grah), meaning “to grasp” or “to seize.” In this sense, a graha is something that takes hold of your awareness and influences how you experience life. It can be understood as a force of influence that shapes perception, behavior, and the unfolding of karma.

The Nine Grahas

Jyotish works with nine primary Grahas:

  • Sun (Sūrya) - vitality, identity, and purpose
  • Moon (Chandra) - mind and emotions
  • Mercury (Budha) - communication, intellect, and learning
  • Venus (Śukra) - pleasure, relationships, and connection
  • Mars (Maṅgala) - action, strength, and drive
  • Jupiter (Guru or Bṛhaspati) - wisdom, growth, and guidance
  • Saturn (Śani) - discipline, time, and responsibility
  • Rahu (North Node of the Moon) - desire, ambition, and worldly obsession
  • Ketu (South Node of the Moon) - detachment, past karma, and spiritual liberation

Not all of these are planets in the modern scientific sense. Rahu and Ketu, for example, are actually mathematical points at the North and South poles of the Moon where eclipses occur. In Jyotish, however, all nine are treated as planets because of their influence. Each represents a specific function of life and consciousness.

In a birth chart, the grahas show how these different aspects of life are expressed and experienced, because they are connected to karma. They do not create your life from nothing, but reflect how past actions and tendencies are expressing themselves in the present. In this way, grahas can be thought of as carriers of karmic influence. They indicate:

  • Where attention and energy tends to go
  • What patterns may arise
  • What areas of life are emphasized
  • What challenges or opportunities may appear

Grahas are not inherently good or bad. Each one has a range of expressions depending on context, placement, and timing.

The bhavas (houses), rashis (signs), and grahas (planets) work together to describe how life unfolds. The bhavas can be understood as the different rooms of a house, representing the areas of life where experiences occur. The rashis are like the design, atmosphere, and qualities of each room, showing the style and manner in which those experiences unfold. The grahas are like the inhabitants of the house, bringing their own unique energies, intentions, and influences into the rooms they occupy.

The houses show where life experiences unfold, the signs describe how those experiences express themselves, and the planets represent the active energies that create movement and experience within the chart.

The grahas shape how you think, feel, act, and respond to life. The same planet can feel supportive in one period of life, yet challenging in another. The idea is to recognize how different forces are moving through your life at a given time. When you understand the planets, you begin to see your birth chart not as a fixed identity, but as a dynamic interaction of forces. This perspective allows for greater awareness, helping you work with these influences rather than being unconsciously shaped by them.
